01 — About

Established in 1984 by Dott. Arch. Dudley Mawalla, MD Consultancy Limited is among Tanzania's longest-standing architectural practices — entrusted by government, parastatal bodies, private developers and many of the region's leading institutions.

Originally founded as MD Consultancy Architects, the practice offers integrated consultancy across architecture, interior design, landscape and project management. We assume responsibility for the full life of a commission — programming, schematic and detailed design, statutory approvals, contract documentation and construction administration — coordinating every consultant and contractor toward a single, uncompromised result.

We are among the few Tanzanian practices to carry substantial professional indemnity insurance on every commission, and to maintain a formal environmental policy written into our specifications and risk assessment. The outcome is a process clients can depend upon: accountable, certified, and consistent from the first sketch to the final certificate.

Dott. Arch. Dudley Mawalla

Dott. Arch. Dudley Mawalla founded the practice in 1984 and continues to lead it as Principal Architect. His career spans four decades of residential and commercial work across Tanzania and Varese, Italy. He qualified as a Geometra in quantity surveying at the De-Fillipi College, Varese (1977), before reading architecture for his Dottore at the Politecnico di Milano (1982).

Elected a corporate member of the Architectural Association of Tanzania in 1990 — and later its Chairman — he remains actively engaged with the professional boards that govern the discipline, and continues to set the standard of rigour for which the practice is known.

01 Architectural Design A complete architectural service — schematic and developed design, working drawings, specifications and contract documentation, followed by construction administration on site to confirm that materials and workmanship meet the standard set. →
02 Interior Design Interiors resolved from concept to detail — spatial planning, electrical and lighting layouts, finishes, joinery and fixtures — specified in accordance with building codes, ergonomics and statutory safety requirements. →
03 Landscape Design Site and landscape design grounded in environmental analysis — drainage, energy and ground conditions — delivered through site plans, specifications and cost estimates, with materials selected for performance and longevity. →
04 Project Management Single-point responsibility across every phase — from client briefing and concept through documentation and procurement to construction administration and final handover. →
How We Work

04 — Method

Pre-Contract

Design & Documentation
  1. Preliminary data collection — site appraisal, survey and capture of the client's brief.
  2. Measurement of existing structures where applicable, and definition of the design intent.
  3. Sketch and concept design, outline proposals, scheme design and developed detail design.
  4. Working drawings and specifications, coordinated with structural, civil and services engineers.
  5. Bills of quantities and tender documentation, with submission for statutory authority approvals.
  6. Pre-qualification of contractors, tender invitation, and appraisal of returns with recommendations.

Post-Contract

Administration & Completion
  1. Periodic site supervision through to satisfactory practical completion.
  2. Advising on variations and modifications arising during construction.
  3. Production information, interim valuations and payment certificates.
  4. Financial appraisal and regular progress reporting to the client.
  5. Certification at practical and final completion.
  6. Final account reconciliation and final payment certificate.
